Welcome to Bizmuth MBE. We empower thin film semiconductor research with a new wave of AI ready software.
Bizmuth was born from a hard truth: the control software powering thin film research is failing the people who use it.
We’re a team that’s lived both sides—on the ground in MBE labs and deep in software architecture. We’ve seen the inefficiency, the vendor lock-in, the burnout. And we’ve built a different path.
Our AI-run, adaptive software, empowers labs to break free from the old way: no more black-box systems, no more $100K for small tweaks, no more wasted time. Just intelligent tools designed by people who get it.
Because real progress needs freedom, not friction.
OUR STORY
Born from frustration. Fuelled by clarity. Built on stubborn hope.
Bizmuth MBE was born from the deep understanding that the status quo does not favour innovation; and an even deeper desire to change it.
Over the past years, both co-founders spent great effort trying to grow a consulting business that never got to fully take off. Interestingly (thanks to Faebian’s MBE blog which dates back to 2012, born out of the frustration of inexistent accessible MBE expertise) what kept finding its way to us during these years were the same kinds of unexpected calls: researchers frustrated with their MBE systems, asking for help, asking if we could make something better. Eventually, we listened.
In 2024, we stepped back and looked at the industry with fresh eyes, and what we saw was enraging. Control software for all thin film techniques —critical infrastructure for research and development—was being designed by people who had never operated the machines themselves. The result was unusable interfaces, basic features missing, weeks of downtime, $100K quotes for tiny changes, and locked-down systems that made innovation impossible. Researchers were – and still are – burning out not from science, but from the tools meant to support it.
So, we built Bizmuth. A company that understands both the trenches and the possibilities. A company that believes lab software should adapt to the user, not the other way around. That believes in intelligence, elegance, and sovereignty. We started by rebuilding legacy control systems like NEXUS and PULSE. And now we are developing UnicornOne. When AI finally reached maturity, we didn’t outsource it, we brought it in-house. Because no one else could capture the nuance we needed.
We exist for the overloaded lab technician, the underpaid postdoc, the PI juggling grants and breakdowns, the startup founder imagining new devices against impossible odds. We’re here to turn downtime into discovery, to unlock the bottlenecks most OEMs have normalized, and to carve out a path for those who want more than status quo.
We didn’t choose to build this company out of idealism. We chose it because no one else was going to—and we knew we could. Welcome to our journey.
